Experimental Research Project
on the effectiveness
of Coaching
is a project of the ICF ITALIA scientific committee

The objectives of the project

  • To measure with scientific criteria, the impact of coaching on specific aspects of the life of those who turn to a professional ICF coach.
  • Have scientifically collected and processed data.
  • Disseminate the research results in order to contribute to the diffusion of coaching in Italy.
  • Allow the construction of best practices in coaching projects

The protagonists of the
Coaching Efficacy project

Coach

Professional coaches associated with ICF Italy with a minimum ACC credential and at least three years of experience.

The coach is a professional who works to facilitate the discovery, clarity and alignment of the objectives that the client wishes to achieve, accompany the client in a personal discovery of these objectives, ensure that the solutions and strategies to be followed emerge by the customer himself, leaving full autonomy and responsibility to the customer.

Customer

Resources belonging to organizations, which have chosen coaching as a tool for individual growth and evolution and who adhere to the experimental research project.

Clients who participate in coaching courses freely choose their development goals and actions to pursue and achieve them within the timeframe set by them.

The scientific basis of the project

The project represents an experimental study that allows to minimize the "noise" inevitably produced in the coach / client relationship and "isolate" as much as possible the effect of coaching in the measurement.

For this purpose, an experimental group and a control group participate in the project. The members of the experimental group, after the administration of the tests, participate in individual coaching sessions lasting 9 hours (6 sessions of 1.5 hours each) at the end of which they complete the tests again. The differential between test and re-test will indicate the variations relative to the dimensions being searched.

Experimental and control group members will be matched according to the following criteria:

  • Age range
  • Gender
  • Role
  • Seniority in the role

Coaching efficacy project

The methodology of the project

Exactly define the phenomenon to be studied: "emotional styles variations"

  • Propose one or more hypotheses: “coaching is effective”.
  • Identify the significant quantities and related units of measurement.
  • Design and conduct an experimental research project to test hypotheses.
  • Change the assumptions if necessary.
  • Collect and analyze the results.
  • Publish and disseminate the results.

Producing evidence means demonstrating consistency between:

  • Phenomenon to study.
  • Hypothesis to be verified.
  • Results obtained from the research.

Type of protocol

Coaching only, sessions or related illustrative material, 200 cases observed

The protocol is functional to the hypothesis that we want to verify.

Type of test

Validated

An invalid test needs a different measurement.

Type of measurement

Explicit criteria (Test and Re-test) Experimental and control group

The criteria and the level of measurement adopted are functional to the magnitude of the phenomenon to be studied.

The scientific committee

  • It promotes the production and synthesis of significant data on the impact of coaching in relation to the achievement of the objectives of each client.
  • Conduct and disseminate literature studies on the effectiveness of coaching.
  • It provides tools and methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of coaching through measurement tools validated by the international scientific community.
  • Creates and promotes the creation of guidelines on methodology and techniques for measuring the impact of coaching on clients.
